True Metaverse is Spatial Computing Combining Reality and Virtuality

“The metaverse is being used incorrectly in Korea. “The real metaverse is not like Zepeto, where virtual humans stay in virtual space.”
 
VR Crew CEO Choi Seong-kwang said in an interview with the Korea Economic Daily on the 2nd, “Metaverse refers to the Internet in ‘spatial computing,’ a three-dimensional Internet environment where reality and virtuality are fused through digital twins.” “The emphasis is on “It’s not a virtual thing, it’s a picture of reality,” he said. He then emphasized, “Spatial computing is a new computing that connects PC and mobile.”
 
Usually, people start a business to solve customers' problems, but CEO Choi is far from this 'standard of starting a business'. After graduating from Hansung Science High School and dropping out of the Department of Physics at POSTECH, he developed technology to complete the mobile virtual reality (VR) game he wanted to play. In 2019, he participated in the Mobile Technology Awards and received the Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning Award for the first time as an individual. Taking this as an opportunity, VR Crew was established in February 2020 with the ambition to create the ‘Internet of the Future’.
 
CEO Choi said, “Bill Gates was ridiculed for saying he would create the Internet when he didn’t even know what the Internet was,” and asked, “If the future of the Internet is spatial computing, isn’t it natural to focus on this?” A lover of fundamentals from his childhood, he fell in love with physics. CEO Choi said, “The charm of physics is that it can explain the world with just one substance called an atom.” Imagination to gain insight into the world led to the founding of a spatial computing technology company.
 
CEO Choi believed that the key to spatial computing is precise location recognition technology (VPS, visual positioning system). This is because as VPS technology, called the next-generation GPS, develops, virtual and reality can be accurately overlapped. He explained, “VR Crew is a company with the VPS technology with the smallest error in Korea,” and “Because the existing image-based VPS has large errors, we focused on positioning technology based on the shape of space.” This company is preparing to become the first domestic VPS to obtain public certification from the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) in November.
 
VR Crew is working on a mixed reality (MR) game content project for vehicles with global automakers such as Volkswagen, Hyundai Motor Company, and Renault Nissan based on VPS technology. The VR Crew game was installed in Chinese AR glasses manufacturer
 
CEO Choi said, “To enjoy MR games in a car, you must be able to play them seamlessly inside and outside the car,” and added, “We plan to release game content for wired AR glasses that operate continuously inside and outside the car next year.”
 
VR Crew's ultimate goal is to develop an operating system (OS) to drive spatial computing. We plan to release a beta version of the cloud-based OS at the end of next year and apply it to a domestic university.
 
CEO Choi predicted, “If you wear AR glasses, you will be able to access or control objects through digital twins superimposed on reality,” and predicted, “Spatial computing will be implemented where homes, offices, buildings, and cities become living computers.”
